About

In 2016, Kara interviewed Torri to fill an event planning position at a nonprofit organization in Holland, MI.  They immediately connected over their love of to-do lists and spending college football seasons tailgating at Spartan Stadium.

While working together, Torri and Kara were selected to co-plan a special fundraising event. During the planning process, their compatibility in work styles became evident through their shared passion for organization and executing each detail perfectly. The women became creative collaborators and sounding boards for each other, which segued into a fast friendship.

Together, Torri and Kara have over a decade of experience in the industry. They have planned a variety of events including weddings, corporate gatherings, community parades, showers, holiday parties, races, graduation celebrations, and nonprofit fundraisers.

The Melons + Marigolds Story

When it came to selecting a name for the business, each woman felt it was important to celebrate their complementary skill sets while also recognizing their individuality. During the brainstorming process, words like enhance, together, complement, and growth were highlighted as pillars of Kara and Torri’s working relationship. When they came across a gardening article discussing companion planting, this sentence immediately resonated with them:
“Many seasoned gardeners believe that certain plant combinations, when positioned side by side, have extraordinary powers to help each other grow.”

Melons and marigolds are companion plants. Torri and Kara, while individuals with unique strengths, see the power in what they can accomplish side by side. The contrasting strengths of each woman create a well-rounded business that has grown through their partnership.
